Yoruba; more than a language.
Do you know that it is widely believed that the origin of the Yoruba as a nation is traced back to Oduduwa in the city of Ile-Ife. Ile-Ife is a city in Osun State, a south-western part of Nigeria. It is acclaimed that in Ile-Ife, there is a spot where Olodumare, the...

I attended this event as one of the photographers, and immediately, I was immersed in the activities taking place.
The food served on the day gave me a little taste of Africa, and I must say, it was delicious. I watched as others served their food, with individuals of African heritage explaining to their friends what each item was. They themselves were delighted to see their culture represented.
I loved the activities: the MC engaging the audience, asking us to share stories from our countries and cultures-which was very entertaining, evidenced by laughter from everyone. The spontaneous singing performance was wonderful- reflecting the African heritage of mothers singing to their children. I also enjoyed the drumming performance, as the drummer invited some of the audience to drum with him while we were encouraged to dance at our own pace and in our own style-which I did, of course!
I enjoyed everything-even the awards segment, which honoured those who have embodied and embraced their African culture in their line of work, setting an example for others to always remember and share their heritage. The forum discussion was also great, with incredible leaders sharing fresh knowledge on topics such as mental health.
Thanks for such a great event. Even though I am Jamaican, I felt the love and togetherness in the room. I felt like I belonged. Thank you for sharing a glimpse of your African heritage, which feels so much like my own.
